2022 | Longlist + Shortlist | Site Specific

Why did you choose to enter this work?
Herbarium mural is a silent celebration of diversity. I believe that illustration and artworks can give voice to issues that are many times difficult to put into words.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
That I got free hand to fill in a 7m long wall. My practice of work is meditative and here I had the possibility to combine planned elements with most of the parts that were created on the spot.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
Being shortlisted is an honor. It was wonderful to follow the lists and connect to other illustrators. Such a variety and so many angles to illustration.

Where do you usually work?
I have a double life, while working on childrens' books during the day, during the night I paint and draw plants. Before the covid times I used to have a separate studio, now I'm working from home.

How long did it take to complete your project?
The actual paiting took a week, prior to which I spent a month reasearching the endagered flora of Finland.

What is your dream commission?
To illustrate a Hermés scarf full of endangered plants from around the world. Why Hermés? Because I admire their knowledge in material and colour, and I belive they can take a stand in this topic.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Plants and scribbles of funny characters.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Look around, get to know other illustrators, follow what is going on but find your own voice. This last bit is the heavy part.

What are your plans for the future?
I'm working right now on a children's book in collaboration with a colleague of mine, and in the Spring I will particiape at a group exhibition with works painted in ceramics.
