2022 | Longlist + Shortlist | Editorial

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I feel it's a relatable image – it symbolises the importance of taking time away from work to unwind, both during and post pandemic. And I was also just really proud of the illustration!

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
The figure! It took a long time for me to feel confident drawing people, and in this case I was really happy with the figure, even though they're small, they have lots of character!

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I’m so excited to have my work recognised! I’ve entered this competition countless times over the years and this is my first shortlist in the WIA. Persistence pays off!

Where do you usually work?
I work from a home office that I share with my wife. My setup is a 'varying degrees of messy' desk, a sketchbook, iMac and a Wacom tablet.

What is your dream commission?
I'd love to do a film poster/print!

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I enjoy working conceptually: pairing themes together, finding common shapes, and communicating messages visually.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
It’s ok not to love every piece of work you create – sometimes things just don’t turn out the way you envisioned!

What are your plans for the future?
Recently I’ve toyed with adding a little bits of motion to my some of my images, and it’s something I’d like to get more proficient at!
