2024 | Longlist + Shortlist | Science & Technology

Preferred Pronoun?
They/them

Why did you choose to enter this work?
This piece is about the psychological influence of being far away from nature on humans. I think it’s highly relevant to the current state of our world.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I think when talking about science & technology illustrations we usually think of digital works. I like that my work is fully traditional while picturing the issues that come with modern technology.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I’m excited about the exposure from being shortlisted. And having my work selected in the Science & Technology category also encourages me to create more works on such topics.

Where do you usually work?
At home. I have a big desk to be messy on and plants around me; a few boxes of paints, from transparent watercolor to opaque poster colors; some color pencils and probably way too many brushes.

How long did it take to complete your project?
1-2 days. Most of my traditional works are made within this much time, so they could stay fresh (physically and also in my mind).

What is your dream commission?
I’d love to publish picture books one day. And collaborating with my favorite musicians is also a dream of mine.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I love drawing environments, indoor or outdoor. I like to see how different colors and lightings can capture certain periods of time and create certain emotions. It’s like setting up for a movie.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Remember to go out from time to time! Take a walk, get some sunshine. It’s so important for both our mental health and inspiration.

What are your plans for the future?
Hopefully get to work in the US for a couple more years. I want to develop more personal works, make more books and figure out how to translate my art into pixel art and animation.
