Why did you choose to enter this work?
I chose to submit this work for the competition because I like this image composition, and I also want to convey the hope of protecting the birds that live along the rivers, who live together with us.
What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I adore the way that the birds are crowding and flocking together, which I think is beautiful. Also the entwined red ribbons are an element I love, an emotion of entanglement and connection.
What excites you most about being shortlisted?
This is my first time being shortlisted for the WIA, so it is exciting for me. And, it's also an honor to be among a lot of great entries.
Where do you usually work?
I usually draw in my studio, but also at home. Occasionally, I take my iPad to a coffee shop to find a corner to think of ideas.
How long did it take to complete your project?
This work took me almost two months to complete. I prefer to spend time on pre-thinking, I think it's important, good composition and idea can make the work more appealing.
What is your dream commission?
My dream appointment work is based on mutual trust. The client conveys ideas to me, and I mix my ideas with them to create the picture. Of course, sufficient references and time are valuable to me.
What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I love to draw birds, clouds, rainbows and those fantasy or abstract images, because the elements of imagination in the images are the key to my storytelling.
What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Please leave some time to continue to draw your own works, because these works are a record of our growth and inner voice.
What are your plans for the future?
I am entering my last year of graduate study at the Maryland Institute College of Art and drawing some stories about myself. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to making more cooperation works.
