Why did you choose to enter this work?
I feel my Some Boats project showcases a progression in my work and my creative voice. Through the use of colour this project successfully demonstrates how my work creates an atmosphere.
What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
My favourite thing about my project is how I have developed my use of colour to help evoke mood and atmosphere. I also have a love for drawing boats!
What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I feel very proud being a part of this years shortlist. It is exciting to be considered for the new talent award within children's book illustration as this is where I would like to develop my voice.
Where do you usually work?
I work from home in my small studio (spare bedroom). I spend quite a lot of time though creating observational drawings out and about as they sparks ideas or help me create more authentic characters.
How long did it take to complete your project?
I created this for my masters stage project and I had 5 months to create this alongside another project.
What is your dream commission?
A picture book with an adventurous narrative.
What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I love to draw everyday moments with a touch of nature for example, riversides and parks. I good tree and buildings together is a lovely contrast to capture. Or boats and their reflections.
What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Draw from life as much as possible and keep a sketchbook for all ideas however silly they seem.
What are your plans for the future?
To keep creating children's book project with the intention for one to reach the shelves of lovely bookshops.
