2024 | AOI Members Award + Longlist + Shortlist | Editorial

Preferred Pronoun?
He/his

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I thought this image combined a lot of interesting elements. History, literature, contemporary elements and a lot of daftness :)

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I was really pleased I was able to create a pastiche of a Roman mosaic, in my style, that combined the reference from historical literature with the modern elements - and still make it funny :)

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
It's always great getting some recognition that you've done something that people like. I love my regular clients but this could lead to new commissions which is an exciting prospect too.

Where do you usually work?
I have a studio in my house filled with lots of daft stuff that inspires me. I work with pencil and pen and Photoshop but increasingly Procreate on the Ipad which gives me freedom to create anywhere!

How long did it take to complete your project?
Not sure how long it took in total but I did spend a cross eyed couple of days colouring in each tile on the mosaic.

What is your dream commission?
I love drawing but a big part of the enjoyment of a project is coming up with concepts. I love Editorial jobs that give me the freedom to use my grey matter!

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I love drawing anything* especially when playing with scale, unusual combinations of imagery, exaggeration and humour. *Not so keen on drawing horses or bicycles :)

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
When starting as an illustrator use all methods of promotion and go for it. Don't hope that work just falls into your lap. You're never fully 'ready' so just go for it!

What are your plans for the future?
As well as continuing with fun, interesting editorial jobs I'd love to get some Picture Books ideas published. Editorial is fun but a few longer Picture Book projects would be crackin.
