2021 | Longlist + Shortlist | Book Covers

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I felt like this cover really represented the type of work I am most proud of and have the most fun making. It was part of my senior thesis and shows all the growth I've had in the program.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
The details! I love that the more you look at this piece, the more little details you can find. It makes viewing the cover interesting each time.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I am so excited to be a part of WIA 2022 because of all the amazing people who make up the show. From artists, judges, AOI team, and more, this showcase has always been so inspiring to me.

Where do you usually work?
I usually work at a small studio space I've built in my room. Although, I admit, it is becoming more of an indoor garden space as time goes on. But, hey, I still have room for my desktop (for now).

How long did it take to complete your project?
This was part of a series of covers that I created in the span of five months. From the beginning of fall term to the beginning of winter. Each cover got roughly one month of research & illustration.

What is your dream commission?
I would love to illustrate from cover to interior spots/maps, a middle grade or young adult book! I absolutely loved reading as a kid, so creating one myself would full-fill that childhood dream.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I love to draw 'surprising details'. Small things that you may not see the first time you look at my work, but when you do catch them its a fun surprise or encourages a laugh.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
I was once given the advice that 'the greatest art project you'll ever work on is yourself'. This has been an invaluable piece of advice to for me. Always bring a little bit of you into your art!

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to jump into the world of book illustration with the dream of eventually writing and illustrating an original graphic novel or illustrated novel.
