2021 | Longlist + Shortlist | Editorial

Preferred Pronoun?
She/her

Why did you choose to enter this work?
Equal access to healthcare is a topic I am very passionate about, and it's no secret you do your best work when you can connect with what you're illustrating

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
This editorial series highlights a serious problem, and I am always happy when I can work on meaningful stories

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I see WIA as a place for illustrators who have dedicated themselves to their craft. And being part of it not only gives me a sense of community, but it also keeps me on my toes.

Where do you usually work?
Upstairs :) Half of my home became a studio, and the other half is occupied with wayward books, prints, plants and, occasionally, me.It’s still a work in progress, but the essentials are all in there.

How long did it take to complete your project?
A couple of weeks.

What is your dream commission?
I’ve had many dream commissions over the years and am grateful to have actually worked on some. But at this moment, I dream of illustrating the covers of Jorge Amado’s books.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I love all things science! Then: Animals. Women. Geometric shapes. Pills. Beyond that, my favorite things to draw tend to manifest from whatever I’m going through at the time.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Allow yourself the time and the space to be uncomfortable. Pick up at least one project per year that ‘forces’ you to learn something new.

What are your plans for the future?
Improving my Dutch
