2022 | Longlist + Shortlist | Editorial

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I think a lot of people can connect with these characters and these kinds of predicaments. These all people and places I've been and that's something special. I wanted to share that with everybody.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
This is really the first time I've made work about my own lived experiences. It's vulnerable but also empowering and exciting. It seems to have resonated with a lot of people and I love that.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
It's validating to see people from all around the world connect with my work and I'm very proud to be sharing the space with so many other incredible artists.

Where do you usually work?
I have a tiny, beat up desk in my studio apartment where I can make a mess and try stuff out when I need to. More often than not though, I'm glued to an iPad at home somewhere.

How long did it take to complete your project?
This started in late August and was finally finished and printed for a show in November: three months of working off and on.

What is your dream commission?
I've always wanted to make one of those weird animated title cards for Adult Swim. Whoever commissions those: call me!

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Dinosaurs. I've been sneaking them into drawings since I was a baby.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Live an interesting life so you'll have good stories to tell later and try to remember everyone you meet along the way.

What are your plans for the future?
I'm finishing my master's degree and looking forward to teaching someday. I'd also love to go to Quebec and get some chickens, so we'll see which comes first.
