New TalentWhy did you make this work:
I made this work as a final major project for my MA degree in illustration. It developed from visually documenting my immigration process to Toronto and exploring the narrative potential of the street art in the city. I wanted to make a picture book that illustrates the experience of feeling alone, unfamiliar and excited in a new environment, in a way that is authentic to a child audience.
How was the illustration used: The illustration forms a children’s picture book of 22 colour double spreads. It is intended for print publication.
How did you make this work: I used analogue processes in my work as the making of the images was heavily tied into their emotive content. I layered several processes within each illustration, including watercolour washes, gouache, pencil crayon, chalk pastel, water-soluble pencil crayons, wax pastels and collage. In one image I included photographs of the dried Ginko leaves collected by my daughter.

Biography:
Emma Lincoln was born in South Africa and studied architecture in Cape Town. She has made drawings as far back onto childhood as she can remember. After 15 years as a professional architect she completed an MA in illustration. She makes work she hopes will ignite the imagination of a young audience. Emma lives in Toronto with her husband three children.
