Eva Eland
When Sadness Comes to Call

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
I started this project during my studies at the master Children's Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. The brief was very open: create a sequence of images that belong to each other. My initial proposal was to make a comforting sequence and address difficult emotions. After various explorations, I made a picturebook about sadness, which I developed further with Andersen Press.

How was the illustration used:
Picturebook

How did you make this work:
I tried to make a universal accessible book, that people could also relate to personally. For this reason, I created very pared-back images and text, to allow the reader the space to reflect on their own experiences, relate to the content and make the story their own. I used pencil drawings, Photoshop and risography to create separate colour layers, which are printed in 3 Pantone colours.
