Sarah Mathew
The Visitor

Children's Publishing

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
This project was completed during the final module on my MA. It is a story about a strange visitor and the kindness of a child. This was a personal project that enabled me to focus on creating light and energy in my illustrations whilst still leaving space for moments of stillness and contemplation - trying to encourage a deeper connection between the reader and the story.

What materials and techniques did you use?:
The illustrations are made by hand using a combination of pastels (in some images using a stencil technique to layer the different colours and shapes), gouache paint and ink. The rough-draft image is made using art-graf (a water soluble graphite) and ink.

How were your illustrations used:
The illustrations were used in my final module on my MA as one of my final projects. I plan to continue to work on this book and hope that one day it will be published.
