  • Why did you create this work?
    The project is based on the lecture "Out in the Coal Path" which reveals life in a coal mining town at the Coal Hill Mt. Washington in Pittsburgh. In the late 19th century, much coal was mined in western Pennsylvania. As miners were needed, the poor from East Europe flooding into mines formed coal mining towns. They worked hard even facing the mine explosions, low wages, and dismissal after strike
  • How were your illustrations used?
    Student work for a lecture.
  • What materials and techniques did you use?
    This project was made using pencil charcoal and monotype. Pencil drawings are finer than charcoal drawings. However, after testing, charcoal proved to be more suitable for monotype.
