World Illustration Awards: interview with sam pierpoint

We spoke to Sam Pierpoint, whose innovative papercut illustrations for wine company Ten Miles East and a project for Visit Bristol were both shortlisted for the World Illustration Awards in 2017. Here, Sam tells us what she’s been up to since being shortlisted for the Awards.

Sam, please can you tell us about yourself and your practice as an illustrator?

I’m a Bristol based independent illustrator and paper artist. Most of my paper sculptures are used commercially, for a variety of different purposes ranging from advertising campaigns, set design, packaging and window displays predominantly in the events, travel, tourism, food and drink sectors.

Can you explain a bit about your process which combines digital and handcut paper techniques?

Everything is pretty much handcrafted and we set the physical piece up in a photography studio. After it’s been photographed the work is digitally retouched and edited to enhance what is already there and sometimes we’ll add in a few extras like smoke, clouds, sunlight and surroundings if necessary.

How has being shortlisted for the Awards changed your practice/career?

It’s been great! I’ve always noticed an extra buzz around the times that my artwork has been shortlisted.

What would your advice be for illustrators who might be thinking about entering this year’s Awards?

Go for it! It’s definitely worth digging out your favourite project or projects from the year putting them out there! I see WIA as a nice way to sum up my year by submitting my best work.

Can you tell us about any forthcoming projects?

I have some fun collaborations planned this month with two great photographers – Tristan Townley and Michael Foyle.
