- Why did you create this work?
Leon Jacob seemed to be a fairly ordinary, entitled, privileged blond kid from Texas while in prep school. Years later, he ended up in prison for ordering a hit man to kill an ex-girlfriend. The story was about his long record of domestic violence, expulsion from multiple medical programs, and probable mental illness and why it didn't set off alarms with the police and courts. - How were your illustrations used?
The lead illustration captures Leon's unwavering gaze, the women he harmed staring defiantly at him. They are being shredded, showing the damage he caused. The internal story illustrations depict stages of Leon's life and career, presenting an idyllic facade to the darkness underneath. The pieces show how wealth and privilege enabled Leon to evade consequences and commit abuses. - What materials and techniques did you use?
The work is made entirely from paper. The main sections are hand cut and torn, built up into layers. The photograph was printed and then the pieces were hand painted. For the photographs, the pieces were hand cut from a printed photograph. The pieces removed from the photograph were then scattered around the image. - Was this project commissioned?
