He/Him - Why did you create this work?
This series was an exploration on my passion for ocean wildlife in the Monterey Bay— and the aquatic life beyond. This is an ongoing personal series playing with the pre-existing shapes that are found in natural life, and exploring the colors that are inspired by the incredible species found in the great blue beyond. - How were your illustrations used?
These illustrations are currently presented as a series of prints, presented in the context of conventions and gallery work. - What materials and techniques did you use?
Digital painting (adobe photoshop, wacom cintiq) and traditional textures (watercolor scanned textures) were utilized in this series of work. - Was this project commissioned?

Jonathan Chen is an illustrator and designer who loves fun shapes and colors. He recently graduated from the CalArts Character Animation program, and has had the opportunity to work as a color designer for Ghee Happy and Storybots: Answer Time!. He is also an avid hiker, climber, and persimmon enthusiast. He can regularly be found with a pack of crayola markers, scribbling away with delight. - Where are you currently based?
