  • Why did you create this work?
Created as a piece of artivism to prompt conversation following a 3 month immersive art residency with CIC Reclaim The Sea in Plymouth, who work with refugees and asylum seekers with sea trauma, to reclaim the sea as a safe space through teaching swimming, surfing, and paddle boarding. It brings attention to the important work of RTS, while raising awareness of sea trauma of migrants.
  • How were your illustrations used?
The piece shows the community and support shown through these activities, as well as a renewed connection to the ocean, the outside pieces (with the community of women on them) float apart from eachother over time but always remain. The installation has gone on exhibit at Nudge Community in Plymouth, Blue Earth Summit, and The Box in Plymouth until 2025, raising awareness and driving conversation.
  • What materials and techniques did you use?
Hand cut and shaped pieces of ply wood, painted in emulsion, and finished with multiple layers of yacht varnish to make it water resistant, and able to float at sea. Immersed in the water, and shot with a drone (credit Time and Tide Aerial) at Devils Point tidal pool in Plymouth, where many of the Reclaim The Sea learning to swim sessions were held to contextualise the piece.
