She/her/hers - Why did you create this work?
“New Briggate was as much about to getting people to where they needed to go, as it was giving them a new destination” - Shaun Page, Leeds Echoes Podcast.
I was commissioned to illustrate the hidden history of New Briggate street, so I explored the history of the street through transportation, from trams in the late19th century to being fully pedestrianised in 2022. - How were your illustrations used?
My illustration was distributed as postcards in local shops, turned into sticker sheets and displayed on lamppost banners to connect with the history of the street - What materials and techniques did you use?
I gathered photos, old tickets and ephemera relating to New Briggate transport in the Leeds Library. I drew architectural features of the street on location, and used the sketches to create cut outs from brown paper and old tickets. Historic photographs from New Briggate informed ink drawings of people in the collage. - Was this project commissioned?
