Eleni Debo
Euthanasia in Youths

Editorial

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
To illustrate a harrowing article by Haro Kraak about youths with death wishes due to psychological suffering. My third image was inspired by a specific scene in the text, where a girl, with an untreatable spinal cord injury after a failed suicide attempt, gets medical approval for euthanasia. She tells her mother: “I wish I could be back in your belly. I want to be in your arms as I go.”

What materials and techniques did you use?:
This series was created digitally. For the third illustration, the only way I felt I could depict such a gut wrenching scene was to draw inspiration from the Pietà Vaticana and Bandini, two pieces that have depicted the heartbreak of a parent having to lay a child to rest, like no other.

How were your illustrations used:
These illustrations were printed in the Opinion section of Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. This particular article spanned several pages in the 4th February 2023 issue.
