- Why did you create this work?
On October 7, 1998, Matthew Shepard, a gay 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming, was brutally attacked, tied to a fence, and left to die. Commemorating the 25th anniversary of his murder, “Always Matt: A Tribute to Matthew Shepard” reflects on his life, death, and ongoing legacy in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Written by Lesléa Newman with a foreword by Jason Collins. - How were your illustrations used?
Along with the illustrated cover, the book features over 60 interior illustrations including an extended author's note featuring portraits of notable figures in Matt's life and legacy. - What materials and techniques did you use?

Brian Britigan is a Minneapolis-based illustrator, artist, and educator who studied art and animation at the University of Washington in Seattle before earning his MFA in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Working as a freelance illustrator since 2015, his work has received a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators and News & Documentary Emmy nomination. - Where are you currently based?
