WHO MADE THE PLANS?
SELF INITIATED GOLD AWARD
NEW TALENT
2006 - IMAGES 30
Susan studied BA (Hons) Illustration at The University of the West of England. She enjoys collecting detail to create an image, mostly drawing and acrylic painting.
“I have a fascination for fairy tales and story telling. Who Made the Plans took the nursery rhyme Who Killed Cock Robin and retold it as a murder mystery.”
“It was a great honour to win Gold for New Talent and also I was quite astounded to win, as I know there are many talented Illustrators out there.”
BRIEF: I set myself the task to use the nursery rhyme Who Killed Cock Robin and make it into a murder mystery.
MATERIALS: Acrylic paints.
RESEARCH: The setting for the mystery had to be something specific. So looked at different crime writing genres.
PROCESS: The most interesting part of the process to make images was to create the characters. I asked family and friends to pose for photographs as the characters. This helped me with detail in painting.
RESISTANCES: My painting process does take a time because I like to build up detail. So I have to be patient.
INSIGHT: I am always looking at the way a book becomes a page-turner.
DISTRACTIONS: At the time of making these images, I had to write a dissertation for my Degree. Plus, I do tend to stop and have a cup of tea and biscuit every now and then.
NUMBERS: There are no numbers in the story, only names.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Since leaving University I have enjoyed creating a variety of artwork. So flexibility in art is key.
