Abi Deniz is shortlisted for the project La Peste in the WIA2021 New Talent Commercial Publishing Category. Find out more about Abi and this shortlisted project:

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?

I think the subject matter is really interesting. I also liked making my friends stand in weird poses for reference photos.

What materials did you use?

I used Photoshop, Procreate, and ink.

What processes did you use?

I collected references, did lots of sketches, and digitally painted with some original brushes I made from ink textures. I also bothered my classmates frequently, asking for critique.

Why did you choose to enter this work?

My professors encouraged me to, and the book seemed… topical.

What is your dream commission?

I love interpreting odd stories and obtuse ideas. So maybe being commissioned to illustrate a surreal book, or someone’s dreams.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?

I’m not sure I’m qualified to give advice! I guess my suggestion is to make and stick to some kind of personal schedule every day. It helps me stay on track with assignments, and to set aside time for personal work, sketching, and reading.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?

Birds, women, natural landscapes, and eldritch horror.
