Preferred Pronoun?
They/ Them
Why did you choose to enter this work?
Textile design has always been something I wanted to do. As an illustrator my main work is in editorial, publishing and so on. So I entered this to see if my textiles were worth pursuing longterm.
What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
That it's 'almost beautiful'. Enough symmetry to imply symmetry without actually being. Naive, chunky lines and texture. It looks rough in a way that could also be luxury.
What excites you most about being shortlisted?
I've never entered for an award, it's all new to me. Getting this work in front of more people is reward in of itself.
Where do you usually work?
I work from a log cabin we built during the pandemic. It's cosy and quiet, until it rains at least. Surrounded on all sides by books so I can procrastinate for as much of the day as possible.
How long did it take to complete your project?
Editorial illustration was my primary career for a while, so honestly I've learned speed in all things. It took an hour. Obviously the weaving and so on was more but the design was an hour at best.
What is your dream commission?
A range of homewares, fabrics and textiles for someone like IKEA. I want my work to be affordable.
What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Flowers.
What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Before doing an initial sketch for a project, describe your image in one short paragraph. You will save time and naturally problem solve the image as you write. Seriously.
What are your plans for the future?
Having lasagna for dinner I think.
