Why did you choose to enter this work?
This work felt to me like a real turning point in my practice. It's authentic to me, but breaks away from some habits or that I would rely on. I wanted to see what others thought as well.
What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I love how authentic it feels to me. I love how it looks, but I love how silly it is the most. I realized that I only love creating work that is a little bit stupid, in the best way.
What excites you most about being shortlisted?
When I made the commitment to focus on my illustration career I was always so inspired by the artists on featured by the WIA. It definitely feels surreal to have my work as up on this website.
Where do you usually work?
I work from my apartment in Montreal. We’ve set up the second bedroom as a joint office / studio / storage room.
How long did it take to complete your project?
The idea for this composition came to me really fast, but I redrew it a bunch of times to get it feeling right. I worked on it over a few days whenever I had a minute.
What is your dream commission?
Definitely a tie between an opportunity to create illustrations for a food publication or to collaborate. I love the idea of my artwork being integrated in the everyday lives of others.
What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Clearly I love to draw food! I also love drawing characters and their weird expressions. I’m really drawn to whimsy, and awkward energy in everyday life.
What is your best tip for other illustrators?
I still feel like I need tips! I guess it would be that whenever you feel stuck or like your spinning your wheels, you should draw something. You’ll feel better.
What are your plans for the future?
I would love to eventually go full time freelance and really throw myself in to my work 100%
