2022 | Longlist + Shortlist | Children's Publishing

Why did you choose to enter this work?
SAIL is a project I always believed in, so receiving a nod from the AOI judges and getting my work seen by a wider audience is absolutely fantastic.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
There is a lot of energy, movement and detail packed into the pages. People say they can almost 'hear' the ocean and are genuinely moved by both text and artwork, which is a lovely thing to see.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
SAIL is a story close to my heart, so it's wonderful for it to receive recognition. It is also great to be part of - and connect with - such an amazing pool of talent from all across the world.

Where do you usually work?
I work from my home studio -- an old 18th century bank building, cat by my side, music on, pot of tea on the go. Bliss!

How long did it take to complete your project?
It's hard to measure as it was months and months of on and off work. The initial story came in one go, but editing took a lot longer and many late hours were spent messing around with paint.

What is your dream commission?
The project I am currently working on for Penguin Random House: artistic freedom, wonderful publisher, great author, plus I get to draw lots of animals! I feel so lucky.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Animals and nature.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Don't compare yourself to others. Be inspired, but focus on you. What do you like? What are your interests? Where do your strength lie? Develop those in order to develop your own style!

What are your plans for the future?
I am about the start a picture book for Dutch publishing house Lemniscaat (my home country). I am planning more school visits and run a book making retreat in Rome in 2023 with inklylarks.com
