Why did you create this work? CLEO by CLOE
This is a book cover for a fictitious graphic novel set in the 1920s, a young person’s search for identity and a reflection on herself.
Cleo, a Belgian painter, escapes to New York. Torn between confidence and self-loathing and faced with financial struggle, she meets Louise Arensberg and Marcel Duchamp, who want to help her. The ensuing friendship opens up different ways of looking at art, and Cleo becomes involved in the Dada movement.

Biography Heike is a printmaker, illustrator and author. She has a background in film design and fine art. Drawing in sketchbooks the facets of everyday urban life has been a strong impulse for her work, which includes narrative and non-fiction picturebooks and illustration for chapter books and young adult literature. Besides experimenting with different printing techniques she loves raiding toy and junk shops, delving into past and distant worlds.
