Illustration, Culture, Society Winter 2014
Varoom’s Obsession issue – an issue about Obsessive practice, Obsessed with Neon, Obsessed with Ladybird, Obsessed with Outsider Artists who are Obsessed with One Thing or another. Writer Linda Scott observes that East End Outsider Artist Madge Gill would paint, knit and sew while in a delirious trance, whilst in possession of her spirit guide Myrninterest. While Barcelona illustrator Mr Mourao says in the We’re Lost In Pictures feature, “The main goal is to draw as much detail as possible so that the viewer gets sucked in and gets lost in the drawing.”
Varoom 24 also features the legendary animator, Run Wrake, whose music obsession generated a unique visual language of ‘pop’; the story of how a little known aspect of Cold War culture became an obsession for designer David Hill and photographer Ilona Karwinska, a personal journey into the history of Neon signage in Poland lead to their Neon Muzeum; Return to Ladybird World unpacks the emotional, cultural and iconic power of a unique slice of visual history. For a generation of middle-aged adults, the lushly illustrated world of Ladybird brought education, the rush of collecting, and a utopian vision of middle-class life.
All this and the round up of compelling work selected by Varoom Contributing Editors, plus I Wish I’d Done This selected by Olaf Hajek and Varoom’s imaginary Ladybird book of Obsession on the cover featuring Shopping with Mother artwork.
