Alissa Thaler – Honouring the Bristol Bus Boycott
Professional
This illustration honours the 60th anniversary of the 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott, a monumental moment in UK Black History.
Having the illustration wrap across a bus driving through the streets of Bristol allows not only to celebrate those who stood together in 1963 but educate people today on this important part of history.
Alissa illustrated a collection of portraits highlighting the key people on the frontline. Along with a vibrant Caribbean colour palate and energetic shapes.
Alissa Thaler is an Italian illustrator and animator based in Bristol, UK.
Lena Yokoyama – Selfridges Shop Windows
Professional
A playful take on luxury, Lena illustrated a multi-layered window display in-store at Selfridges London.
Their characters capture the movement, personality and buzz of the store whilst incorporating stock from the store.
The piece has so much character, keeping Lena sketchy and gestural use of line through a DIY approach using high-res scanners.
Lena Yokoyama is a Japanese/Austrian illustrator and printmaker based in London.
Priscilla Tey – Formula 1 Singapore Suite, A City in Nature
Professional
Priscilla was asked by the Singapore Tourism Board and to create an immersive piece of wall art for the VIP suite at the 2023 F1 Singapore GP.
The piece celebrates the city by illustrating a series of architectural arches with overgrowing plants bursting across the walls. Showcasing a harmony of natural and urban landscape.
Priscilla’s illustration also has a sense of calm despite the bustling movement, creating a peaceful escape for those visiting.
Priscilla Tey is an illustrator based in Singapore.
Joël de Ruiter – Lady with Snake friend
New Talent
The Rotterdam Rooftop Days, better known in Dutch as ‘Rotterdamse Dakendagen,’ is an annual event that allows artists acces to rooftops that will normally be inaccessible.
Joël took this opportunity to paint this energetic mural on the rooftop of a Mall in Rotterdam Zuid.
With a symmetrical use of shape and striking composition the mural features a central female figure “Seen as the source and guiding force of creation, creativity and the life cycle.”
Joël de Ruiter is a Dutch illustrator based in Schiedam.
Chantal Lieu – Infinite Space
New Talent
Responding to an open call, Chantal transformed an otherwise ordinary electricity box into a playful piece of art.
Their illustration “Infinite Space” celebrates urban open spaces with a geometric pattern that creates a sense of optical illusion.
Chantal wanted the illustration to encourage people of looking at the world around them.
Chantal Lieu is an illustrator based in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.
Sammi Wong – Re-imagine Ipswich
New Talent
Inspired by Sammi’s local town centre in Ipswich. This personal illustration creates a sense of hope and connection, aiming to bring vibrancy to the local community.
The large scale map design restores the side of the grey building, adorned with streets and iconic locations for the community to recognise.
The illustration has a feeling of belonging and pride, whilst abstracting these familiar locations into celebratory shapes and colours.
Sammi Wong is an illustrator currently studying at The University of Suffolk.
