Sally Anderson
My Illustrator Bio:
My name’s Sally Anderson and here’s a little more about me… I am a sassy Ginger mum of four mixed heritage children, with a passion for including diversity and challenging boundaries in the publishing world. I want my kids to be represented and often base my characters around them.
I am a freelance illustrator specialising in Children’s book illustration.
I love to use ink and a dip pen and work primarily with watercolour but am currently diversifying into digital illustration while maintaining the same watercolour feel. My subjects are usually children and animal characters, but I really love to draw ANYTHING! In addition to Children’s book illustration, I create bespoke character illustrations, greetings cards, mural work, and also teach!
I completed my degree specialising in Illustration, obtaining a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design. From there, I worked part-time as a print technician while also freelancing as an illustrator. A few years later, I began working in Further Education, teaching painting, drawing, life drawing, and of course, illustration.
I took a career break to have more children (I’m stopping at 4!) and have been working freelance for the last few years, focusing on Children’s book illustration, primarily picture books. I am based in Derbyshire, just on the edge of the Peak District, and love working from my messy home studio in my house with my cat Flossy and sausage dog Frida. They usually sit within inches of me and often walk on my drawing board (Flossy) at the most inconvenient times! I am also planning to get a tortoise, so watch this space!
I love illustrating and I am so grateful this is my job. I enjoy sharing my passion with others through my work and teaching people of all ages to appreciate the joy that drawing brings to the soul.
In my free time, I enjoy exploring the beautiful landscapes of the Peak District with my family, finding inspiration in nature for my work and the odd little character we meet. I love taking my sketchbook out to draw from life to help me ‘see’ my characters and love going to life drawing as my ‘me’ time. I am an advocate for representation and inclusivity in children’s literature, striving to create stories and illustrations that reflect the diverse world we live in. Through my art, I aim to inspire others to embrace creativity and celebrate diversity.
