I am a freelance illustrator for Books Beyond Words, who produce picture-led books for people with learning disabilities. The books deal with some of life’s issues, and are designed for people who find pictures easier to read than words. In Spring 2020 I illustrated ‘Beating the Virus’ in response to the Covid-19 crisis, showing a character with a learning disability finding the support she needs. The same character, Kali, first appeared in ‘Belonging’, which explores social isolation. ‘Choosing My First Job’ focusses on young people with learning disabilities leaving education and moving into the workplace, and ‘Going To Church’ deals with a young man’s desire to access a spiritual dimension in his life. I co-authored and illustrated ‘A Day at the Beach’ with readers of the books, and I provided two illustrations for a reprint of the ‘Going into Hospital’ title. My portfolio work is characterised by observation, and sometimes a gentle humour, showing glimpsed moments of people and places – using clear lines and strong flat colours. I enjoy capturing bird life, and exploring the decorative and natural forms of flowers and plants.
