Lucy Bergonzi
I am a freelance illustrator for Books Beyond Words, who produce picture-led books for people with learning disabilities. The books help to deal with some of life’s issues, and are designed for people who find pictures easier to read than words. In 2020-21 I completed three projects relating to Covid-19: ‘Beating the Virus’ explores self-care and support while suffering illness, and ‘Having a Test for Coronavirus’ deals specifically with the testing process. ‘Love in Lockdown’ explores the emotional and mental health impact of the pandemic, and shows the vaccination process. All are published free online at www.booksbeyondwords.co.uk.
‘Choosing my First Job’ focusses on young people with learning disabilities leaving education and moving into the workplace; and ‘Belonging’ brings together two characters who are both socially isolated in different ways. ‘Going To Church’ deals with a young man’s desire to access a spiritual and faith dimension in his life, and I co-authored and illustrated ‘A Day at the Beach’ with readers of the books. I also provided two illustrations for the reprint of the ‘Going into Hospital’ title.
My portfolio work is characterised by observation, and sometimes a gentle humour, showing glimpsed moments of people and places – using clear lines and strong flat colours. I enjoy capturing bird life, and exploring the decorative and natural forms of flowers and plants.
