Ailbhe Phelan

I was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. A graphics graduate from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, I’ve worked in London as a graphic designer for over 20 years. I’ve always drawn and since 2009, when I began a personal food blog where I illustrate my posts*, I’ve been regularly approached to create illustrations for clients, often food related but not exclusively. I’ve been a partner in 2-man graphic design studio, Decoder, since 1995. My years of working as a designer gives me an appreciation of how an illustration has to work within a layout, within budget, the effect of print or digital media, the importance of deadlines and, importantly, how to work with a client. Recent commissions have included work for food packaging client and marketing material for a London brewery. My work is realistic in look, often sketchy and in the main a mix of hand drawn and digital. When I’m not designing or illustrating I cook, dream about being super-fit and have become a born-again gardener.*in 2013 I was shortlisted for a Fortnum & Mason Food and Drinks Award for my illustrative work on my food blog, simplysplendiferous.com.
