The Illustrated Freelancer’s Guide w/ Heather Parry
Meet UpsJoin Glasgow’s illustrator meet-up group for an online talk, plus Q&A, with Heather Parry – author of ‘The Illustrated Freelancer’s Guide’. Book below or via our Eventbrite.
We’ve invited the author of ‘The Illustrated Freelancer’s Guide’, Heather Parry, to reveal more about how the guide came to be and what it teaches us.
The guide, and this online event, will cover such topics as how to set up as a sole trader, best practices for managing money and taxes, what legal protections are available to freelancers and how to use them, and even templates for use when payment is late or unforthcoming.
We will hear directly from Heather before opening up the conversation for questions and further discussion… a safe space to discuss our own experiences as freelancers.
The Illustrated Freelancer’s Guide is a highly practical guide for creative freelancers in Scotland – and beyond. Free for anyone that needs it, the guide takes information that’s often inaccessible and turgid, and presents it in a way that is easy to understand, utilising Maria Stoian’s inimitable comics style throughout.
This project is designed to remove some of the barriers freelancers face when trying to inform themselves of their rights and protections, and help freelancers to take back their agency with education — and great visuals — at their fingertips.
Heather Parry is a Glasgow-based writer, editor, and publisher. She is the co-founder and Editorial Director of Extra Teeth magazine, co-host of the Teenage Scream podcast and the Scottish Senior Policy & Liaison Manager for the Society of Authors, a trade union for writers. In 2021 she created the free-access Illustrated Freelancer’s Guide with artist Maria Stoian. Her short stories and nonfiction have been published internationally, and her debut novel, Orpheus Builds a Girl, was published in October 2022 with Gallic Books.
Illo-G is the Glasgow illustrator meet-up, supported by The AOI, and hosted by illustrator Tita Berredo.
