Boxes – People are more than tick boxes

Degree Shows, Exhibitions

It is with excitement that our AOI 2022 mentee Emclemmie / Emma Clements (see our full interview here!) shares her Pop-Up exhibition to celebrate the end of her degree with Open College of the Arts.

Boxes explore the theme of identity and feeling that do not quite fit into any box. Through narrative artwork, the theme is explored visually through a character called Kit, as they explore what boxes mean to them.

Do we stick to our boxes or break out of them?

Emclemmie expands: “As soon as we are born, we are put into boxes, age, race, gender, disability. Growing up as a deaf girl in mainstream school wearing hearing aids I never really belonged to any box, which led to a lot of identity crises and what this means to me. I am collaborating with Sheffield Flourish which is a charity that promotes healing via storytelling. The audience will be able to get involved and paint/decorate their own boxes to share as part of the exhibition or take away with them as part of a healing or fun experience.”

29th August can be an appointment only (For accessibility and ease of access) – please get in touch to book.
