AOI Discusses: Pitching Your Illustrated Picture Book

Online Events, Talks

AOI Discusses continues this season, with a focus on how to pitch your illustrated picture book to publishers.

Having the idea for a picture book is one step, but how do you then make sure that idea gets seen by the right people and is given the best chance for success?

We invite a conversation between award-winning author-illustrator Jane Porter and Picture Book Editorial Director at Walker Books, Maria Tunney, to delve into the ins and outs of pitching your picture book idea. We will gain insight into their experience of both pitching and receiving picture book proposals, what publishers are looking for, as well as a look into how an illustrator and commissioner work together to bring an idea to life.

Jane Porter is an award-winning children’s author and illustrator with over 15 picture books to her name. She gets inspiration from her weekly nursery class, as well as from her online comics class which includes students from all over the world.

Maria Tunney is the Picture Book Editorial Director at Walker Books. Born and raised in Donegal, Ireland, she has been editing picture books for over 15 years. Within the small, dedicated picture book team of designers and editors at Walker, Maria has worked closely with scores of brilliant bookmakers.
