  • Why did you create this work?
The animation gives those on the outside a look at how prisoners trade goods behind bars. It was created for an 8-episode video series created by The Marshall Project and VICE News to bring investigative journalism on the criminal justice system to incarcerated audiences and those on the outside, too.
  • How were your illustrations used?
Böhm's illustrations in their grays and whites bring viewers into a world few see: solitary confinement. The spare use of color to start convey the sense of isolation. There's a visible shift in the drawings to color, underscoring the sensory deprivation that comes with confinement. Outside, the viewer can seen, with the drawings and motion, the challenge and promise of trade behind bars.
