When I was 21 I lived in a van and drove to Baja Mexico. I found this shell on the beach and kept it for 2 decades. Now at a totally different stage in my life I took another look at the shell, researched it and was shocked to discover that it was a pelagic octopus' egg case. The octopus secretes the shell, deposits her eggs in it then sends it floating away. This was the inspiration for the painting.
