Why did you make this work:
Two-thirds of British Pakistanis today have a connection to Mangla Dam, a region where my family come from. My story looks at the largely untold and overlooked history of the mass displacement and subsequent migration the region saw after Partition & WW2. With this backdrop, I unpack my own experiences of othering, racism and marginalisation not uncommon to the British migrant experience.

How was the illustration used:
The illustrations are part of a 288 page authorial graphic novel where I have both written and drawn the entire piece. It has been published by Myriad Editions and is available in all good bookshops.

How did you make this work:
My compass is mine and my family’s lived embodied experience. I take memories and feelings and start to research around them. I’ll often be guided by articles and papers written on race theory, psychotherapy, migration, gender studies, these inform me and help guide what I want to say. I then iterate between words and drawings until I land both. I draw by hand, but colour and compose digitally.

Sabba Khan is an artist, architectural designer and graphic novelist living in East London. Her practice delves into unspoken and unacknowledged parts of British history,unpacking rootlessness, displacement and intergenerational trauma faced by migrant communities.
