Why did you make this work:
This was a personal project which sprouted from the question, ‘What would a Paper Painting look like?’ Techniques used in historical paintings were identified and then applied to paper. Most influential were ideas around underdrawing, layering, making the ordinary interesting and rewarding the viewer who takes a closer look.

How did you make this work:
Shapes are simplified through sketches and then cut by hand from cardstock. Each piece is layered with ink and assembled with glue. A digital scan ensures the texture is revealed and offers the opportunity for a digital background.

Biography:
Kïa is a self taught illustrator and design enthusiast. After graduating with an MA in Museum Studies (UK) she spent many years working with quite nice national art collections. Her knack for paper collage surfaced during lockdown in 2020, where a playful visual language emerged. Kia is in her 'happy place' when collaborative ideas and lively observations are created with minimal fuss or flounce.
