Six UK bee species were chosen by Royal Mail, in consultation with experts, to represent different habitats and the different kinds of bees that breed in the UK, in order to showcase the diversity of UK bees and draw attention to the decline of certain species. The brief was to represent the six chosen species accurately and to show living bees, with an indication of their habitat. In addition, each stamp had to be obviously different from the others and recognisable at first glance.
