Carson McNamara
‘I didn’t know what I was supposed to do'

Editorial

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
This piece was commissioned by the Guardian through Art Director Rita Liu. She reached out to say they had a story on miscarriages and fetal remains, which is a a tricky subject to depict. I wanted to focus on the thesis of the piece: almost 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, and they can affect anyone. I wanted to show many people in this difficult and now legally uncertain momement.

What materials and techniques did you use?:
Digital painting, procreate

How were your illustrations used:
My animated illustration ran as a header image, with the individual frames being used as spots throughout.
