Chris Paul
Farewell To Manzanar

Editorial

Un-commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
I created this illustration as a part of a series I am exploring chronicling the lesser known and forgotten American sub-cultures over the past 100 years.

What materials and techniques did you use?:
I hand drew rough compositions on paper traditionally, then explored color schemes, then sketched the silhouettes and general forms on canvas, then began painting with oil, acrylic and then digital paint from there, in varying layers and applying different brushstrokes. It's important to me to show the actual brushstrokes in an original painting rather than create a perfectly smooth gradation.

How were your illustrations used:
I created this painting through my own unique process to be included as part of a body of work illustrating American sub-culture life that's not talked about in the current media. The body of work, including this illustration, will be seen in different venues over the next 2 years.
