Chiung Xiaoqiong Zhang
The Awakening of Insects

Animation

Un-commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
Awakening of Insects is the third solar term in the Chinese lunar year. It is a lovely word in Chinese. It signals a rise in temperature and increased rainfall. The thunder of spring awakens the dormant animals of winter and the earth begins to come back to life. It represents the reviving of life. During the pandemic, I came up with the idea of making an animation about the Awakening of Insects.

What materials and techniques did you use?:
I used After Effects, Adobe Animate, and Photoshop. I experimented with risograph printing textures in my animation. Combining printing techniques with my digital artwork was crucial to my creative process.

How were your illustrations used:
It was my thesis film when I studied at MFA Computer Arts of School of Visual Arts.
