Why did you make this work:
Commissioned by Cloudberries as their first glow-in-the-dark jigsaw puzzle. As the ink works best when printed over white, all of the nocturnal wildlife and night-blooming flowers are white-on-dark images. However, to make it more fun to assemble, I contrasted them against different backgrounds in a palette of vibrant night skies.

What materials and techniques did you use?:
This work was a combination of digital drawing in procreate and hand-marbled paper textures. As well as stippling with white on dark, I used techniques inspired by printmaking and paper collage. Knowing that it would have a wrap-around box design, and that we were going for a art-nouveau inspired composition, I incorporated the dimensions of the box into the 'windows'.

How were your illustrations used:
My illustrations were used as the jigsaw puzzle image, and on the puzzle box.

Biography:
Jennifer N. R. Smith is an award-winning illustrator and the director of WonderTheory Studio, based in Bristol. She studied Drawing at Camberwell, UAL, and is also a qualified scientific and medical illustrator, using her creative and technical training in tandem. She has worked with clients such as Thames and Hudson, Virago, Wildfire, Penguin Random House and The British Library.
