The River

Why did you make this work:
I made this work because I get inspiration from an ancient Chinese poem that conveys the theme of nature and Zen culture. The poem is about the philosophy of nature, and emptying the soul to gain inner peace, by looking into the cleansing stream and river. Water, which represents purity, can refresh the mind. The poem reminds me of my childhood summer.

How was the illustration used:
The illustration is a portfolio piece, which could be used in a children’s editorial; it was intended to be a standalone art piece.

How did you make this work:
I made this work digitally. As an ancient Chinese philosopher would, I gained inspiration by reading and listening to ancient Chinese poems and music. I close my eyes and empty my mind of bodily awareness and thought. I gain feeling by smelling the scents of herbs and flowers while listening to the white noise of rain. Then I made ten thumbnails. I selected this one and turned it into sketches.
