INTERVIEW WITH MAGOZ, WORLD ILLUSTRATION AWARDS 2019 PROFESSIONAL EXPERIMENTAL CATEGORY WINNER

Magoz is a multidisciplinary artist based in Malmö, Sweden. His work focuses on visual communication, problem-solving, and minimalism. Through a poetic language, Magoz focuses on the conceptual value of his images. The elements are reduced to a minimum, resulting in images using bold colours, without strokes, gradients or ornaments, yet full of meaning.

About the project

I do a lot of personal work and experimenting. Distortion is one of those projects I work on a weekly basis.

Brief

To goal was to create an interactive animation between a character and the canvas itself.

Materials

Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, and Ableton.

Obstacles

Separating the channels to create the distortion effect was a bit tricky.

Insights

Sound and music are becoming more and more important in my work.

Distractions

I always have a bunch of projects on my desk, some commissions, and some personal projects. I also travel several times a month, so this project was developed during the usual juggling.

Numbers

The entire project took about 20h, from sketches to finalizing the animation.

Reflection

I am very happy with the result, but, as always, there is room for improvement. Maybe I would tweak a bit the proportions and the character’s shape.

Advice

Always work on personal projects, it’s the best fuel for creativity.
