Over the past fifty years AOI Patron Shirley Hughes has enchanted, delighted and fascinated readers both young and old. The children that grew up with her wonderful books are now parents themselves – teaching and guiding their own families with the same stories that they loved so much as children.

This exhibition displays a range of the vivid and colourful characters that inhabit Shirley’s enchanting world, with whom her stories have now become our own. She has generously released a series of delightful studies providing rich insight in to the working methods and creation of each character in books long-published as well as the much-awaited new Alfie and his Very Best Friend.
