A few years ago I found a children's ABC book from the 1970s in an antique shop. I’d had the very same book as a child, and It was fascinating for me to revisit this innocent illustrated world as a cynical and paranoid adult. I immediately wanted to create my own version, painted in the same saccharine way but with the childlike words - Apple, Girl, Soldier etc twisted into sinister adult themes.

How did you make this work: I avoided the obvious and crude approach of just drawing adult things: D is for Drugs, P is for Porn etc. I wanted the book to be more than a tacky throwaway gag. Whilst it’s true that some pages are simply funny, others cover serious themes: exploitation, animal cruelty, the way disabled ex-servicemen and women are treated etc.It was illustrated using an iPad, Apple pencil and Procreate.
