This piece was created as a cover for an in-process self-initiated graphic novel project. Forest Gothic is an anthology collection of stories drawing on thematic elements from Victorian Gothic literature and set in a wondrous and often eerie setting deep within a haunted forest.
How was the illustration used: The illustration was used for a cover of a graphic novel anthology.
How did you make this work: The process begin with word-listing thematic elements and doing a brain-dump sketch of imagery to draw on for the individual stories. From there the cover was created to combine some of these elements and convey a clear mood for the anthology. Art was finished in Procreate.

Biography:
Rachel Bostick is an illustrator based in Austin, Texas. She graduated with a BFA in Communication Design in 2018 and will begin pursuing her MA in Children's Book Illustration at Anglia Ruskin University in Fall 2021. Her work takes inspiration from a fascination with fantastical folklore, haunting historical tales, and old-world beauty to convey concepts and narratives that are at once both dark and moody, and whimsical and romantic. She often incorporates hand-lettering and custom typography in her illustrations, and enjoys creating work for a variety of applications including book covers and interiors, graphic novels, picture books, zines, posters, merchandise, etc.
