Why did you make this work:
I was asked by Penguin Random House to design a consistent series of book covers including illustration and type design for the collected works of Irish author Donal Ryan, and also for his forthcoming novel Strange Flowers.

How was the illustration used:
Book covers and related promotion.

How did you make this work:
The illustrations were created using a combination of traditional watercolour painting and digital editing on Photoshop. I painted the pieces using only one colour of watercolour to allow me to focus on depth and composition. I then edited the piece digitally to introduce colour and additional depth through scanned in found textures. The text was traced in pencil and scanned in to add frailty.

Biography:
Owen Gent is an Illustrator based in Centrespace Studios in Bristol, England. Owen Graduated from Falmouth university in 2013 and has worked as a freelance artist and illustrator since then. Recent clients include The Economist, The New Yorker, Penguin Random House, The BBC, Harper Collins and The New York Times.
